10 Questions to Ask Before Recording a Family Legacy Video

Short answer: the best family legacy videos are planned around people and stories, not equipment. Answer these ten questions and the filming takes care of itself.

  1. Who is the film for? Grandchildren not yet born? The whole extended family? It shapes the tone.
  2. Who is the main storyteller? Usually a parent or grandparent – the person whose life the film honours.
  3. Who else should speak? Everyone, even briefly. A few words from each child and grandchild make it a family film, not a monologue.
  4. Where is home? The kitchen table, the farm, the church, the old neighbourhood – places carry memory.
  5. What photos, letters and home videos exist? Start gathering now; we scan and restore them for the film.
  6. Which stories must not be missed? Write down five. We will get the rest in conversation.
  7. Is there a deadline? A 50th anniversary, an 80th birthday, a reunion – a premiere date focuses everyone.
  8. How much time can the family give? We spend a few days together so it never feels rushed.
  9. Are there sensitive topics? Tell us beforehand; we handle them gently or leave them out.
  10. How will you keep it? We deliver high-quality files for sharing and safekeeping – make copies for each household.
