Why You Should Record Your Parents’ Stories This Year

Short answer: because the stories your parents and grandparents carry — how they met, the journey that brought your family here, the hard years and the funny ones — disappear when they do. A family legacy documentary records those stories, in their own voices, while there is still time. Families almost always tell us the same thing afterward: “I wish we had done this sooner.”

What a legacy film captures that photos can’t

  • Their voice – the accent, the laugh, the pause before a hard memory.
  • Their character – how they tell a story, what they find funny, what they believe.
  • The family story as a whole – not one person’s memory, but everyone’s, woven together.

How we do it

We do not arrive with a camera and a list of questions. We spend a few days with your family, filming the way you naturally are together — meals, jokes, quiet moments — and we sit down with every member for an interview. Some run long; some are just a few heartfelt words about the person the film honours. Then we weave it all together with your photos and home videos. Read more on our Family Legacy Documentary page.

When is the right time?

Now. Health changes quickly, and the best interviews happen while the storyteller is comfortable and sharp. Milestone birthdays, anniversaries and family reunions in the Okanagan are natural occasions to film.

What it costs

Our Family History Documentary is $1,800 and the multi-day Generations Documentary is $3,500, with additional interviews at $350. Talk to us about your family — we will listen first and plan it with you.
