10 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session in the Okanagan
Family photos should feel like a good memory in the making—not a stressful afternoon of forced smiles. After years of photographing families across Kelowna and the wider Okanagan, we’ve learned that the most beautiful, natural images come from a little planning and a relaxed approach. Here are ten tips to help you get the most out of your next family photo session.

1. Book the golden hour
The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give you soft, flattering light with none of the harsh midday shadows. In the Okanagan summer that often means an early evening session—which also happens to be when the lake and vineyards look their best.
2. Choose a location that means something to you
A favourite beach on Okanagan Lake, a walk in Knox Mountain Park, your own backyard—locations you love lead to photos that feel like you. If you’re not sure, we’re happy to suggest spots around Kelowna that photograph beautifully in every season.
3. Coordinate outfits—don’t match them
Pick two or three complementary colours and let everyone dress within that palette. Soft, neutral, and earthy tones tend to age well and keep the focus on faces rather than logos or busy patterns.

4. Time it around the little ones
Schedule around naps and meals so children arrive rested and fed. A hungry or tired toddler is the single most common reason a session feels like hard work—and it’s the easiest thing to plan around.
5. Bring a few small bribes (we won’t tell)
Snacks, a favourite toy, or the promise of ice cream afterward work wonders. We’ll build these little moments into the shoot—some of the best frames happen when kids forget the camera is there.
6. Plan for candid moments, not just posed ones
Posed portraits have their place, but the photos families treasure most are usually the in-between ones: a shared laugh, a piggyback ride, a quiet cuddle. We’ll mix gentle direction with plenty of room for real interaction.

7. Keep the group manageable
Extended-family sessions are wonderful, but larger groups need more time. If grandparents, cousins, and pets are joining, let us know in advance so we can plan the pacing and get everyone in the frame without the rush.
8. Don’t forget the pets
Pets are family too. Bring a leash, a favourite treat, and a helper who can step out of frame to hold them between shots. Some of our favourite Okanagan family photos have a happy dog right in the middle of them.
9. Relax—your kids take their cues from you
If you’re at ease, your children will be too. Treat the session as a fun walk together rather than a formal event, and let us handle the technical side. The more you enjoy it, the better the photos look.
10. Book early for the season you want
Autumn colour, summer lake evenings, and fresh spring greenery all book up fast in the Okanagan. Reserving your date a few weeks ahead gives you the best choice of light, location, and time of day.
